Technological Topic: Big Data / Data Analytics

Venue: Online via Webex

Description:

This selection event is conceived with two specific purposes within the AT Virtual project: on the one hand, to contribute to spread the features and potentials of the Big Data / Data analytics and its application in maritime conditions and, on the other hand, to carry out the selection of the start-ups that will collaborate with the Maritime Safety Training Centres in the development of the solutions proposed to face their challenges. This competition will be both public with a pitch contest and private with face to face interviews where the applicants will have the opportunity to defend their proposal and respond the questions formulated by the centres for a better understanding of the solution.

Fernando Bação, Full Professor, NOVA IMS

The exponential growth of data has produced significant impacts in all areas of human activity. The possibility of transforming this data into relevant information for decision-making, through the use of machine learning techniques, constitutes a unique opportunity to increase efficiency, optimize decision-making processes and build a future of sustainable prosperity. Activities related to the sea are no exception to this trend. Characterized by its complexity, the maritime industry requires the ability to adapt quickly to constant changes and is characterized by a decision-making context with a large number of parameters. In this presentation, we will briefly summarize the most relevant Big Data and Machine Learning applications in the context of the maritime industry and look at the future impact of these technologies on activities related to the Sea.

Miguel Neto, Full Professor, NOVA IMS

In a context of increasing availability of data from multiple sources and different formats about the sea, it is important to establish collaborative strategies for its aggregation, storage, processing and analysis, taking advantage of the most recent technological developments, in particular cognitive services in the cloud, to explore the potential for building descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytical capabilities. In this session we will present the potential that a Business Intelligence & Analytics approach offers today for the creation of value on sea data and refer to some projects that are currently under development in this area at NOVA Information Management School.
