Bridge resource management. Blended learning
Collective

Captains and deck officers with responsibility for the navigational watch.

Requirement: Valid certification.

Goals

General goals:
On completion of the course, participants will be able to apply the principles of Bridge Resource Management to maintain a safe watch at the operational level.

Specific goals:

  • Identify and distinguish the concepts of MRM, GRM and BRM, as well as the basic BRM principles applicable to watchkeeping.
  • Recognise the biases and attitudes that can lead to error and that represent one of the main causes of accidents.
  • Effectively manage the bridge team using the style of command (authority) and leadership (influence) most appropriate to the team and the situation, while prioritising resources (human and material) appropriately.
  • Assign, delegate and distribute tasks and workload within the bridge team, achieving the cooperation, coordination and motivation necessary for effective performance.
  • Communicate effectively to reduce communication failures and interference on the bridge (internal and external), while accounting for cultural diversity.
  • Recognise the importance of maintaining situational awareness by identifying signs of loss of such awareness in relation to the different levels that comprise it. Properly consider the team’s experience and input (challenge and response) to support better decision-making, both during voyage planning and in all other bridge activities.
