- From 11 to 15 March, representatives will provide information at AULA on training pathways leading to stable and secure employment within the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy and Maritime Rescue.
- Visitors to the stand will have the opportunity to experience, through a simulator, how maritime emergency operations are conducted.
- The stand will also host the Jovellanos Centre www.centrojovellanos.es dependent on the Maritime Rescue Agency, which is a renowned centre for the training of emergency response professionals.
- A wide range of activities will be offered, including workshops on nautical charts and maritime knots.
The Directorate General of the Merchant Navy (DGMM) and the Maritime Rescue Agency, both under the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, will once again participate in AULA, held as part of the Education Fair at IFEMA from 11 to 15 March. The aim is to showcase the stable and secure employment opportunities available within these institutions and to encourage young people to “embark” on careers in the maritime sector, where professional pathways are diverse, and unemployment is, in many cases, virtually non-existent.
- At stand 14G10, located in Hall 14, the Maritime Rescue Agency, serving as the operational arm of the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy, will provide information on professions linked to its operations, including the protection of human life at sea, maritime traffic control, and responses to marine pollution incidents.
- Furthermore, the Directorate-General for the Merchant Navy will discuss the professions within its scope, which include: ensuring maritime transport safety through ship inspections; saving lives at sea; regulating maritime navigation; managing maritime traffic; and enforcing maritime protection regulations, among others.
- The stand will also feature the Jovellanos Centre, dependent on the Maritime Rescue Agency and located in Veranes (Asturias), a prominent institution in training emergency professionals. The centre offers specialised courses such as maritime safety, manoeuvring and navigation, training for professional and port firefighters, among many others. The full training programme is available at: www.centrojovellanos.es
- During the five days of the fair (11th to 15th March), topics related to both the Merchant Navy and Maritime Rescue Agency will be explained, including ship inspection, pollution prevention, maritime safety, maritime traffic, the fight against marine pollution, and the integration of women into the maritime sector.
- The Maritime Rescue Agency will provide information on the various educational and professional pathways (more information at this link) for working in some of its most sought-after positions: captains, sailors, controllers, cooks, mechanics, electricians, and greasers, among many others.
- The DGMM will inform students about how to enter careers such as maritime safety inspector, maritime safety and inspection coordinator, or sea captain, and will explain that their career path could lead to roles related to project approval, ship control and supervision, regulation development, and even positions in international organisations such as the IMO, EMSA, or the European Commission.
During the fair and in the days leading up to AULA, the social media channels of the Maritime Rescue Agency and the Ministry of Transport will post videos and content featuring professionals explaining their work and motivating young people to pursue similar career paths.
- Additionally, there will be workshops on reading nautical charts and tying nautical knots, which are essential for venturing into the maritime world. Equipment and materials used in rescue operations will be on display, and visitors will have the chance to experience emergency procedures using a ship simulator provided by the simulator and nautical services company Anexus Spain.
- A wheel of fortune with prizes to discover the various units involved in rescue operations, the well-known game Battleship, which here becomes “Save the Fleet”, and a photo call for crews, so students can feel, even if only for a moment, like real sailors. The programme is sure to have more surprises in store.
